De Italiaan is op weg naar zijn beste resultaat in een World Tour rittenkoers.
De 7e etappe in de Tirreno-Adriatico was er eentje van de ‘muri’, de korte en steile klimmetjes. Al vroeg in de etappe trok een groep van 14 renners op avontuur, met daarbij Davide Ballerini namens Deceuninck – Quick-Step. De groep reed al snel 5 minuten weg bij het peloton, maar op de lokale ronde in Loreto liep die voorsprong snel terug.
Vooraan sloeg de kopgroep ondertussen uit elkaar, terwijl vanuit de achtergrond renners de oversteek maakten. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) greep uiteindelijk de ritzege, enkele seconden later kwam de voorwacht van het peloton over de streep met daarbij Fausto Masnada en James Knox.
Masnada behield zo zijn vijfde plek in het klassement, drie plekken verder gevolgd door Knox. Morgen volgt in San Benedetto del Tronto de laatste opdracht van deze ronde: een individuele tijdrit over ruim 10 kilometer.
